Who I am

I am an academic and a professional journalist, specialising in the critical examination of local media. I focus  on the legacy of local newspapers and their societal significance. My career began in local journalism following my graduation from the University of East Anglia, where I earned a degree in English Literature and Philosophy.  I advanced  from reporter to senior editorial roles within daily news. Transitioning into academia allowed me to meet the demands of family life and built on my journalism experience to cultivate expertise in local journalism research.

My doctoral studies concentrated on the  evolution of the local newspaper from its roots in the 18th century. I am now dedicated to  using this historicised understanding to elucidate the profound impact that local journalism exerts on communities.  I challenge conventional beliefs within both industry and academic circles, advocating for a deeper recognition of the multifaceted value that local journalism provides.

I have also developed a robust teaching practice and have assumed academic leadership positions. Since January 2026, I have operated as an independent academic.
